Spring Greens Shopping Guide

The long awaited change from winter to spring is finally here in the North East. I was hiking with my husband and children this weekend, and we were thrilled to see some early signs of awakening, from the blooms peaking out of the ground, to the bugs (my daughter Nadia’s favorite past-time), to the greening of the grasses.

In Chinese medicine, spring is the time for new beginnings. It is the time of year that your body naturally sheds its winter coat, cleansing itself of the heavy fats and foods of winter.

The excess weight that warms us in the colder months doesn’t serve us energetically in the warmer months ahead. We naturally eat less, and the foods our bodies crave are often light foods like sprouts and fresh greens.

Fresh greens are the foods most missing from our modern day diets. They are essential for our health, spring’s perfect remedy for winter’s heaviness, bloat, and extra weight. Adding spring greens to your diet will help to spring clean your body and reward you with vibrant energy.

Here are my favorite energizing green veggies to add to your spring shopping list:

  1. Artichoke
  2. Arugula
  3. Asparagus
  4. Butter or Boston Lettuce
  5. Chard
  6. Dandelion greens
  7. Spinach
  8. Watercress

Fresh greens are the first sign of the lighter dishes of spring. As the days get warmer, start to look for them in your local market.
