When I worked for Saks Fifth Ave corporate in NY, I would save a few weeks of salary and splurge on a high quality clothing purchase in the store. I learned pretty quickly that for me, one high quality purchase was worth more than ten lesser quality products. In fact, I bought a pair of Hogan sneakers that kid you not, to this day I still wear!
Yesterday, I was shopping locally for Easter bunnies for my children, and was approached by a woman who was wondering why I had the smaller, pricier bunny in my hand. “Kids don’t know the difference in quality, buy this one,” she advised, pointing to a much larger bunny with bright white and yellow eyes and colorful chocolate clothing. Well yes, actually, they do. Children’s bodies know the difference between a pure chocolate bunny and a chocolate bunny containing artificial flavors, colors and preservatives.
If you’re celebrating Easter this weekend, try reading the ingredients before making a purchase. Typically a good chocolate will contain very few ingredients. Rather than this chocolate bunny:
Containing sugar, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (palm kernel, palm, soybean and/or cottonseed), whey, crisp rice (rice, sugar, salt, barley malt), cocoa, lactose, skim milk, milk, soy lecithin (emulsifier), vanillin (artificial flavor), U.S. certified colors (FD&C blue #1, blue#2, red #40, yellow #5, yellow #6 lakes, and red #3).
Purchase this chocolate bunny:
Containing organic cocoa mass, organic raw cane sugar, organic cocoa butter, emulsifier: soy lecithin, organic vanilla extract, organic whole milk powder*.
The higher quality bunny is a dark chocolate bunny, preferable over light or milk chocolate because it provides nutritional benefits. Dark chocolate is loaded with natural antioxidants and minerals. It’s the cacao, from cacao beans, that is nutrient rich. So the higher the cacao content, the darker the chocolate, and the greater the nutrient content of the chocolate. Please note that while dark chocolate is preferable, too much sugar, even from dark chocolate, is problematic for little bodies in large quantities.
